If wedding bells will be ringing in 2010 for you or someone close to you, I have some good information to share. While it has been quite some time since I planned my own honeymoon, I had a refresher in Honeymoon 101 recently because my son, Michael, and fiance, Lauren, are getting married next July. What better wedding gift could I offer them than travel?
They wanted warm weather, a beach, fine dining and water sports. I began gathering information for some of the top honeymoon destinations like Hawaii, Jamaica, Aruba, the US Virgin Islands and St. Lucia—cruising through the Caribbean or the Mediterranean would have qualified too. After considering flying time to the destination, the positives of all-inclusive properties and online viewing of the properties and ships, Michael and Lauren chose the Sandals Grande St. Lucian. They were able to secure the exact room that they wanted and excellent flight times because they booked far in advance. One very smart decision on their part was planning to leave the Monday after their wedding, giving them plenty of time to spend with family and friends between the wedding and the honeymoon.
Other popular honeymoon destinations include the Riviera Maya in Mexico, romantic getaways in Italy and France, and South Pacific islands like Tahiti and Fiji. If you want to stay in the lower 48, some top destinations include Las Vegas and Florida. If you are interested in beautiful scenery, wine and fine dining, then heading to northern California’s wine country could be the destination for you. You would have to take multiple honeymoons or anniversary trips to experience the hundreds of wineries in Sonoma and Napa. My personal favorite honeymoon destination is New Orleans—I would have to reserve a whole column about why I love this city so much—but the highlights include some of the best restaurants in the world, a rich history, a pedestrian-friendly downtown, great music and several of the most romantic and quaint hotels and inns in the United States.
