Based on the famous story of Don Juan, Opera Columbus’ presentation of Opera Atelier in Mozart’s "Don Giovanni" tells the story of an incorrigible young playboy who self-destructs in the course of just one day. If you are familiar with the story of Don Juan, you know that he is one of the most cunning and devoted skirt chasers in history, although he loves the women whom he chases almost as much as they love him.
Mozart entered the work into his catalogue as an "opera buffa." Although sometimes classified as comic, it blends comedy, melodrama and supernatural elements. It originally premiered at the Prague Italian opera in the Teatro di Praga (now called the Estates Theatre) on October 29, 1787. Columbus Opera fans will get their chance to see it performed at the Southern Theatre on November 25th and 27th.
