Based on the story and characters from William Steig’s book Shrek! as well as the animated film Shrek, the musical stage version of this tall tale is just as fun. The musical follows the story of a swamp-dwelling ogre named Shrek who goes on a life-changing adventure to reclaim the deed to his land. Joined by wise-cracking donkey, this unlikely hero fights a fearsome dragon, rescues a feisty princess, and ultimately learns that real friendship and true love aren’t only found in fairytales.
As an added treat, Columbus’ own Liz Shivener will return home to play the feisty Princess Fiona during the Jan. 10-15 performances at the Ohio Theatre. Shivener, who also played Belle in the touring production of Beauty and The Beast, grew up in Reynoldsburg and would be the first in line to see the musicals that come through Columbus. Now she relishes the opportunity to perform for friends and family in the theatre that she once sat in as a guest.
The show features a terrific score of 19 all-new songs, big laughs, great dancing, and breathtaking scenery. Tickets start at $28 and can be purchased at the Ohio Theatre Ticket Office ( 39 E. State St. ) and on www.ticketmaster.com.
