Turn on HGTV at almost any time of day, and you’ll invariably run across some program showcasing the most impressive living spaces from all over the country. From National Open House to My House Is Worth What? to What You Get For The Money, these shows are known for up-close and intimate tours, often at multiple price points reaching into the millions. This month, C Magazine is fortunate enough to spotlight one of these truly spectacular homes. And although it has yet to make an appearance on HGTV, we can assure you from first-hand experience that it’s primed and ready for a close-up.
This particular home, though it has a Westerville address, is actually just minutes from Polaris Fashion Mall. Its backyard borders a prominent hole on the golf course of The Lakes Country Club, which means its surroundings are every bit as beautiful as you’d imagine. At a distance, your eye can’t help but focus on the home’s pristine stucco exterior. Upon arrival, however, you’re sure to be delighted by subtler details like the full brick pavered driveway and professional landscaping that incorporates lighting, a fountain and a fishpond.
As you walk past the twin two-car garages (both of which lend a wonderful sense of symmetry to the external structure) and into the home’s main entryway, you find yourself in a grand two-level foyer with marble flooring and a dramatically curved staircase. From there, you can walk right into the formal dining room and fully appreciate its lighted tray ceiling, decorative columns and serving bar. Linking the dining room to the kitchen is a separate serving bar with a hammered copper sink and decorated with intricate, one-of-a-kind tile.
As for the kitchen itself, there are few spaces in central Ohio more appropriate for a showcase in our annual “Food Issue” than this one. Any discussion undoubtedly begins with the absolutely gigantic three-tiered island. In fact, the word “island” simply doesn’t do it justice. If you were to liken a typical kitchen island to an actual island—say the size of Hawaii for example—the parallel here would be no less than Australia. Now sure, Australia doesn’t exactly qualify as an island, considering it’s geographically classified as a continent…but believe us, it’s no overstatement! It’s massive, it’s a showpiece, and it’s any cook’s dream come true. All in all, the kitchen comes complete with two sub-zero refrigeration units, two dishwashers, two cooling drawers, two built-in microwaves, a Viking cooking system, a warming drawer, an ice maker, a wine captain and a trash compactor.
Just off the kitchen is a door leading out to the home’s sprawling deck and outdoor living space. Once outside, you find you’re on the second-level of a three-level space as the master bedroom’s private deck is above you and the basement’s walkout patio is below you. Outdoor features include a gazebo, hot-tub and in-ground swimming pool, pavered brick on the basement’s level and wrought-iron fencing. Perhaps the most unique feature is the property’s cozy fire-pit, situated on a man-made lake stocked with fish.
Back inside, the two-level great room boasts a chandelier, built-in entertainment center and a limestone fireplace with raised granite hearth. The sunroom is best described in terms of walls and glass with a double set of leaded glass doors, fireplace with a raised marble hearth and fantastic views. In the home’s study you’ll find another fireplace (this one with a raised marble hearth) and intricate woodwork in the form of a built-in trophy case and plenty of shelving. One highlight on the main floor is the heated screened-in porch overlooking the fish pond… a true retreat from the rest of the world!
In the basement, you’ll find a spacious bedroom (with full bath) and a second, smaller kitchen with cook-top, dishwasher, trash compactor, ice maker, microwave and an under-counter refrigerator. This level also has a temperature-controlled 2,000 bottle wine cellar complete with a hand-painted mural of the house and pond, in addition to a billiard room, exercise room with ballet bar and a second full bath complete with a steam shower. On the home’s top-most level, you’ll find two more bedrooms (again, both with private bathrooms) and a master suite with yet another raised hearth fireplace, sculpted ceiling, a kitchenette, his and her bathrooms and closets, heated floors, whirlpool tub, and a separate space for the toilet, bidet, shower and vanity. It’s worth noting that this floor has its own laundry room, as do the other two floors as well.
