Greg Schenk - Lease on Life
With a resume boasting more than 20 years of experience in the Columbus real estate landscape and beyond, Greg Schenk made a career out of renegotiating leases to make profitability a more likely outcome for businesses. After losing his brother to cancer at a young age, Schenk has made it his business to try to renegotiate and renew the leases on the lives on many of the underprivileged or unhealthy.
“When my brother Jeff died of cancer, I made a promise to myself that I would live life enough for two people,” says Schenk. “It was really hard for a couple of years, but I’ve been fortunate enough to be in a position to give back.”
Since 1986, the Schenk Company has donated money to charities ranging from the United Way to Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Schenk has also spoken and been involved in basketball camps at recreation centers in the distressed areas of Columbus. He believes that the foundation for his company’s success has been their ability to help others first, which is obvious to anyone who takes a peak at his checkbook. For every sale that Schenk makes, he donates part of it to charities, and as he will tell you, he’s written a lot of checks lately.
“There is so much empty office space sitting around in Columbus right now, it’s the time to take advantage of the vacancies,” says Schenk. “A lot of people don’t know that they can take on someone like me to represent them for basically nothing.”
Schenk has made what he would characterize as “ridiculous” deals for companies recently, saving them loads of money on their monthly costs that they can funnel into their company. His efforts in negotiating more favorable leases can free up funds that go directly to the company’s bottom line and can be used for any needs that might come up.
“The money that a company can save from their lease can go into expansion,” says Schenk. “They can use that money to hire more employees, buy desks, phones, computers, and sometimes we can even throw that in through negotiations.”
