Within the walls of a modest brick building off the beaten path of Broad Street in downtown Columbus lays an automotive treasure chest. Rare Jaguars sit next to Porsches and Lamborghinis. Stan Yates, founder and co-owner of Specialty Sports Cars has had everything from world championship racecars to a workingman’s dream car line the walls of his garage.
“We get to work on cars that other people only get to read about,” says Yates. “We’ve worked on the car Bobby Rahal drove when he won the world championship and one of the Porsches that won Le Mans in the 70’s. The list goes on and on.”
Yates, who started the business nearly 30 years ago, always had a passion for cars and went to school to learn about the technical side of things. After working at a Roll’s Royce dealership, Yates got together with good friend Mark Boyd and the business was born. “I like to think that Stan looks at things from a technical perspective, whereas I look at things from an artistic perspective, considering my background in art from CCAD,” says Boyd. “I think we compliment each other well.”
The dynamic duo built a reputation as the go-to-guys for rare cars strictly by word of mouth. They got cars to purr that had been sitting in a garage for years with no hope—and the cars they worked on would leave most others in their dust at racetracks like Mid-Ohio. Unsurprisingly, their client list continued to grow over the years.
“We’ll work on anything from an MG that a guy just wants to run on the weekends to a one in one hundred racecar,” says Boyd. “We like to make Columbus’ automotive dreams come true.”
