Is Columbus the next L.A.? Y Boutique owners Yenny Tan and Sese Tan seem to think so. Their chic boutique, tucked away in the Gateway Center, features such L.A. clothing lines as Nicky Hilton and Frankie B., bringing a little glitz and glamour to an otherwise underdressed population. “We carry unique clothing you can’t find anywhere else,” Sese says. “And at reasonable prices,” Yenny adds.
After completing fashion school in California, Yenny tried the online thing, without much success. “People are more reluctant to buy online,” Yenny says. A boutique was more her style – a hip store where shoppers could come in and try on the latest fashion lines. Sese, a friend she met in a Singapore high school, joined the venture. The girls migrated east, spreading their fashion wisdom to the heart of America.
“Columbus has a lot of potential. It is growing really fast and it’s good for retail,” Sese says. “But I don’t see a lot of boutiques. I think we are one of the couple in Columbus.”
The Tans have created a hip haven for stylish adults looking for a bit of L.A., minus the L.A. prices. The Y Boutique offers everything from affordable denim and funky t-shirts to sophisticated chiffon cocktail dresses, all for under $100. No outfit would be complete without shiny accessories – bangles and hoops or white studded belts. “You can find anything here and put your own style to it,” says Yenny.
